Geryah Dingle is an American singer-songwriter known for her unique blend of inspirational, folk, and jazz tones in her vocal delivery. Her follow-up to her debut single, ‘MISSIONARY,’ releases 16 July 2021.
“But I Used to Be” is an introspective look into one’s past experiences and the role one might have had in some of the consequences of their actions. That person is now saying, “I demand a new man,” and starting anew and no longer listening to that negative voice in their head, but instead confessing with their tongue, giving it all to God, and claiming their new life. Because of the grace of God, that person doesn’t exist anymore. Even when the haters try to turn back the clock, there is no power in that anymore.
Geryah initiated the project with the original record she recorded on January 2, 2003. In her usual fashion, the recording started with a raw acapella iPhone voice memo. “I was going for a certain vibe with this one that really hit home with the messaging,” she said. The studio recording incorporates drums, guitar, piano, and synthesizers for the Lo-fi Christian Contemporary chill mood with rhythmic beats.
She and Jay, the record producer, settled in on a tempo that was soulful and lofi sound by chopping up the vocals to match the track tempo one hears on the released record. The bridge is a complete change of pace and, “Really brings the listener in to the message of folks trying to bring you down and bring you back to a place or person you once were.”
Geryah and Jay worked on the project for seven weeks and incorporated a few vocal and drum loops for the backing track, as she
tracked her parts from her home studio.
The "But I Used to Be" worldwide debut is July 16, 2021, on all platforms.
