A nod to the true influences in her life

The story behind my song, "Anywhere," is that it's a look inside the thoughts of a young woman who sees a bright future ahead, which gives her hope, not because of a reliance on herself, necessarily, but rather all the people and influences around her that opened endless possibilities. Essentially, her faith in God has encouraged her so much that there's no glass ceiling she can't break.

I wrote the original lyrics back in 2001, but Idan Altman and I started working on the production on 24 April 2021 and finished in about three weeks. He's an Indie, Alternative, Ambient, Jazz producer, writer, and mixing/mastering engineer. I completed the track remotely, so we started with a brief video teleconference to discuss the demo track and the way forward.

Initially, the first decisions I had to make were if we were going to build the track around a piano or guitar. The R&B genre heavily inspired the song, hence the instrumentation choices. Then, I had to decide on what I wanted the drums to sound like. So, there I was, sifting thru several drum tracks for something to stand out.

Idan was highly responsive and did his best to make the production process as collaborative as possible. As soon as we finished developing the piano chords, we created the entire structure for the song. Then, I redid the vocals over the piano and drums instrumental. We had to cut some of the original lyrics to fit the timing and make for even verses, but I'm happy with the finished product and feel the message still comes across clearly (i.e., anything is possible God.

Once I completed the vocals and comping for the best takes, Idan began to mix everything, as he made space for the vocals by cutting the kick a bit on the drums. We also began to develop the electric guitar part, which starts on the second half of the first verse. I felt the addition of the electric guitar is what gives the song so much more life and movement - so, we added a second one.

Once the electrics were complete, we moved to that delicious bass line. I feel the bass line takes you back and makes the song feel a bit like a throwback joint. We also integrated an organ and some additional effects in the transition back from the bridge; this allowed the piece could come together.

This song was a ton of fun to work on. I attribute this to the amount of involvement I had in the production of this project. I think it provides a message of hope for anyone out there striving to accomplish their dreams and a nod to those true "influencers" who help pave the way. You can do it!

The "Anywhere" worldwide debut is on 20 August 2021 on all platforms.
